Some Differences Between Experts and Novices - 1 views

  •
This excerpt is taken from the book "The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-Learning Methods and Strategies for Training and Education" Game-Learning Learning have been increasingly used in educational settings in the last 10 years and there is a lot of research on this subject. I wonder if there is any on game-Learning Learning how experts and novices solve certain problems in the game environments. Sounds a promising research area.

The example of Making sale in differentiating novices and experts is stunning. While novices focus on making the sale , experts develop relationships. The former aims to think, organize information for a limited time for that thing only. However the latter thinks more elaboratelly, develop ways for a long period of time for future connections which is wiser. Thus, we can see that experts know how to use their long term memory effectively compared to novices.

Learning by Design - Kids Build - 0 views

  •
In this video kids build their designs and exhibit them, hence their parents could see what their children do, how they learn etc.
  •
In that video, there is a project called Kids Build. Children built cities based on given maps of Boston. They construct the city environment by different materials. Although, it seems really fun, I did not understand what teachers target to teach students? Is it for only creativity? Since children are not so grown up, concrete thinking was targeted I think. Still, what was the "content" is still blur for me. edit: Opps, duplicate :).
  •
Here's a previously-shared example of learning by design by "Kids Build!" project. I think just getting the hands of the kids dirty is an outcome by itself. Although they do not possess abstract thinking skills at such a young age, I still think these are the ages when an interest sparks in the child, which could then turn into a passion.

An alternative schooling model in Turkey - 2 views

  •

A learner-centred school in Turkey? I really wonder how these students will perform at university entrance exam. Pass or fail? I am really curious about the results.
  •
I cjecked the socie-economic status of the families. Families seem to be high in terms of socie-economic status. This made me think that the students will not worry about university enterance exams, since they will have some opportunity to enter some private ones.
  •
Yess, this is the school I mentioned earlier and I couldn't remember their name. I also follow them on Twitter. Such an innovative approach! I think we need more alternative models. Also think about the pedagogical approach in these schools and their relations to Situated Learning. Check out: "http://www.baskabirokulmumkun.net/bbom/biz-kimiz/"
  •
I think this is certainly a more situated-learning learning school as there is no exam threat :) However, we should completely change the system, if we want to apply this schooling all over Turkey. With our system, we can't even fulfill "learning" because of the hundreds of exams. We just try to pass the exams with grade anxiety. Also, what about the socio-economically disadvantaged schools? They don't have such a luxury, I think.

participants for building democracy, non profit organization, interdisciplinary teachers, students are decision makers, it reminded me the society centered curriculum and the ideas in conflictand the Dewey's popular saying "school is a miniature society" :)

most probably you have heard that Summerhill School in England. It is a boarding school founded by A.S. Neill in 1921 and its basic principle is the school should be made to fit the child, rather than the child should be made to fit the school. I think the one in Turkey might be founded based on the Summerhill School. here is is website for more information; www.summerhillschool.co.uk
  •
There is this point that I totally agree with Burcu about disadvantaged groups. Also whenever I think about examples like Sudbury Valley, I get impressed by the idea of getting rid of exam threat. But for our country, we have to change like everything, the belief systems, the culture, the attitudes. We have a lot do to in that respect, even if our main intention to make just a small change.

Tynker - Immersive Game Worlds for Kids to Learn Programming - 0 views

  •
Tynker is the English online platform where the students (children) are taught programming. The aim of the platform is to provide a solid infrastructure for STEM to prepare for the 21st century. Its slogan is "the easiest way to learn programming at school" and more than 20,000 schools use this program. It also include design base learning. I think learning programming at early ages is very important for children to develop their critical and algorithmic thinking skills. This platform facilitates both teachers' work and makes it fun for children.

I really like the program. Even I can use it to learn the basic things from this program. Thanks for the share!

"For us it was a learning experience": Design, development and implementation of blended learning - 1 views

  •
    1. The purpose of this paper is to share reflections of the three authors on the process of instructional design and implementation of blended learning for teachers' professional development (PD) in rural western Kenya. 2. There are for different reserach questions but one of them is caught my attention as we have the same problem in our country I think; How appropriate is blended learning for teachers in a rural setting? 3. The design-learning research methodology in the study comprised a number of research methods. The methods included ethnographic observations, qualitative interviews, narratives and documentation of design artifacts

Hi, When I was reading motivation chapter, I have thought that the following statement can be true for this activity However, attempts to enhance interest can backfire and decrease learning. Brophy (1999) cautioned against using "bells and whistles" to obtain interest. Evidence from the interest literature specifically cautions against using seductive details in text (Schraw & Lehman, 2001). Seductive details are highly interesting for students, but may draw attention toward issues that are less relevant, potentially deflecting attention away from key ideas. Using classroom demonstrations in science that include explosions or other attention getting devices has similar effects. What do you think? Is there any rule for engaging classroom activities to increase learning
  •
Hi Evrim Hocam; Thanks for sharing this video. I lwatched and istened to it with great curiosity :) Hi Selçuk; I agree with you to some extent. If the point is having students memorize something, it is useful. Yet, if the point is related to deep understanding, it is not very beneficial.
  •
Yes, I agree repetition and passive demonstration may not have as much impact as active exploration. I recommend using these approaches for factual learning or things that require recall. But, for deep learning, other approaches such as problem learning learning offer much better results.

I like the idea of including different stakeholders in the DBR process. Learning is a complex phenomenon. Context plays a critical role in the DBR on Learning. Perhaps, we need to think about ways to build a DBR team.
  •
Hocam, it would be nice to build a DBR team, we desperately need such an innovation in our field. Maybe, there can be DBR schools where researchers can work with voluntary teachers. If some incentives are provided for the teachers by MONE, they will work eagerly in the projects. Just an example: nowadays, lots of English teachers are doing really good Comenius projects and the motive behind their hard work is going abroad:)
  •
+1 for DBR team & DBR Schools. I can try to find some support from MONE side.

Design-Based Research | Canadian Education Association (CEA) - 1 views

  •
As the issues and problems that define contemporary education become increasingly complex, our collective need for new knowledge and innovative solutions for practice in diverse educational contexts increases. Yet classroom teachers and school leaders often struggle to see any meaningful connection between educational research conducted in universities and their real-world, complex and contextually rich experiences of teaching, learning and leading in schools.

Design‐based research: designing a multimedia environment to support language based - 2 views

  •
Adopting a design-based research methodology, this study used digital video technology to support reflective tasks for language based in multimedia environments. The emphasis was on the improvement of oral communication skills. The reflective tasks used in this study were exposed to iterative design process and the whole research process was driven by two underlying based theories. This iterative and theory driven design reflects the nature of DBR well.

  •
Hi Yasin, thanks for sharing the research study. It is a good example for DBR, like you said, as it includes a theory driven iterative process which is one of the most fundamental characteristics of DBR.
  •
Is there ant iteration in the design here? Or is it the implementation of three different courses?
  •
Hocam, students' reflective practice happened in different formats each year. To be more specific, task-completion tools and task-completion formats were exposed to an iterative design. Each year a different tool and a format were implemented and the reflection by the students progressed in an iterative way though it was conducted with different classes. For example, in 2006, students of Class 1 reviewed their presentations in a multimedia player and reflected on it via a word-processing program. In 2008, YouTube was used for their presentations and they had a collaborative reflective task after being paired with each other. So, a different design was applied for each year but in an iterative fashion.

Rethinking Learning in the Digital Age - 0 views

A visionary article from Mitchel Resnick. "The shift in focus from "information" to "knowledge" is an improvement. But I prefer a different conception: the "Creative Society." As I see it, success in the future will be based not on how much we know, but on our ability to think and act creatively"

Jack Mezirow and Transformative Learning - 0 views

  •
I would like to present and give information on Jack Mezirow who is known as the founder of the concept of transformative learning. According to his ideas, individuals transform their frames of reference through critical reflection on the assumptions upon which their interpretations, beliefs, and habits of mind or points of view are learning. Personal frames of references in the learning process is underlined. He is now Emeritus Professor of Adult and Continuing Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

A Source on Situated Learning - 2 views

  •
some more ideas on Situated Learning Theory for us:)
  •
The goal is to improve learning by motivating students and by providing a rich context for learning. It emphasizes the context and application of knowledge rather than memorizing facts (Heeter, 2005). This quotation is crucial for me because in Turkey, the education is learning on memorization simply. The knowledge is "high on the clouds". We need to make it more usable and applicable.
